In addition, colorful fishing boats splash around in the harbor basin, setting out daily to supply the local taverns with fresh fish.

The long beach of Makrigialos starts next to the harbor and extends the entire length of the village, where you can find everything you need for your vacation: cafes, mini markets, one or two banks, a selection of small shops and a colorful array of taverns. The beach is ideal for families with small children, as the water slopes gently into the sea.

Makrigialos is an ideal location for a relaxing vacation, but it is also a wonderful starting point for excursions, hikes and explorations. The area has an incredible diversity; hidden secluded beaches, wild rugged coastlines and traditional, timeless mountain villages are just part of the unspoilt eastern Crete.

You can experience the island’s long history up close at the Minoan palace of Zakros or the 14th-century Touplou monastery. Or take a stroll in the present through the nearby harbor towns of Sitia or Ierapetra!
