On the outskirts of the sleepy village of Mithi lies our little holiday cottage, Sarakina Spiti, nestled amidst the green mountain landscape. God must have taken particular care here when he created the earth. The peaks of the Cretan mountains soar into the brilliant blue sky, and the blue sea glistens on the horizon.

Are you looking for peace and quiet on your holiday? Then Sarakina Spiti is the perfect place for you! The only sounds here are the wind rustling through the olive trees from time to time, the eager chirping of crickets, and perhaps the occasional goat passing by your cottage out of curiosity.

The cottage is particularly popular with couples, though one or two additional guests can easily sleep on the fold-out sofa in the living area. The modern kitchen is fully equipped for proper cooking, and the dishwasher saves you the hassle of washing up afterwards. There is plenty of firewood in the garden, so you can enjoy a glass of Cretan wine in the evening by the crackling open fire. The centrepiece of Sarakina Spiti is, of course, the terrace with its magnificent view. It is covered, so you have plenty of shade. However, you are also welcome to move the table out into the garden if you prefer the sun. The sun lounger and the hammock are perfect for a midday break.

Less than a kilometre away lies the impressive Sarakina Gorge. It is jokingly referred to as the ‘little sister’ of the famous Samaria Gorge, as it too features high, narrow cliffs, though it is considerably shorter. Also lovely for walkers, the ‘Minoan Path’ begins right in the village of Mithi – a route the Minoans walked thousands of years ago. These are just two examples, but there are many more.

The beach is five kilometres away. In Mirtos there is a long pebble beach which is awarded the “Blue Flag” every year. Very pretty tavernas and cafés line the seafront promenade. Sarakina Spiti – a holiday in the heart of nature!
